The Plasencia Reserva Organica is the world’s first organic cigar. Made with organic Nicaragua-grown tobacco, the cigar is crafted by the Plasencia family – the firm that also produces cigars for Rocky Patel and Flor de Selva. The Plasencia Reserva Organica is intended as a reference to the first cigars rolled at the beginning of civilization in South America. Plasencia Reserva Organica cigars are the ORIGINAL 100% certified organic cigars. Using pre-Colombian farming methods, Plasencia grows the tobaccos in two regions of Nicaragua where the soils are dark, rich and pristine. Only Cuban seed is used and is selected over the course of several harvests from plants noted to be particularly suited for farming without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. To replace artificial pesticides on the farms, special interim crops are planted that are tilled under as soon as they flower to provide nutrition for the main harvest. Sunflowers are planted around edges of the fields to attract particular types of insect away from the crop, preventing excessive damage. After harvesting, the leaves are carefully cured, then aged three years to produce a rich-tasting, well-balanced blend. These mild to medium-bodied cigars have a pure, natural tobacco flavor augmented by woody notes.
Certified organic since 2001
Tobacco and smoking products are not generally considered to be the organic movement material. Maybe this is the stereotype the makers of Plasencia Reserva Organica wanted to break in becoming the first company to create organically grown cigars.
The idea was born in 1998, and the family received official “organic” certification for their two farms in 2001. The Plasencia Reserva Organica tobacco is grown on the Plasencia owned fields in Esteli and Jalapa. Because the tobacco comes only from these sources, production is quite limited. The Plasencia Reserva Organica is available in 5 formats: Churchill, Toro, Corona, Piramide, and Robusto.
