Within the next five years, economic powerhouse China is expected to see a surge in the number of private jets in Asia. The biggest winners in all this will be the supporting industries such as aircraft chartering and maintenance companies with eyes on new growth opportunities.

According to industry data, China has over 110 private jets and is expected to overtake Australia and Oceania, currently the largest at over 160 private jets. Even among China’s wealthiest individuals private jets are a rare luxury.

China’s market is booming because its registered private jets are a fraction of the 15,000 jets registered in the US, but the world’s second largest economy has 4 times the population of US. Overall, experts say Asia is now the rising market while demand in Europe and the US dries up. One of China’s largest private jet operators, Deer Jet, has an estimated fleet size of around 30, up from about 12 jets just three years ago.

Leithen Francis, Asia editor at Aviation Weekly said: “Unlike the United States where you tend to get an individual or company that’s maybe owned business jets for decades, so they trade in their old business jets to get a new jet, what’s different about China is that 90 per cent of customers are new to business aviation; they have never operate business jets before.” Which is why jet management companies here are seeing a boom.

Secondary industries like aircraft chartering companies are on the rise, as private jet demand grows in the region. Privé International has seen a significant increase over the past year in private jet inquiries which has prompted us to put more focus on the Asian market, not only for charters but for acquisitions as well. The Chinese government has eased regulations on airspace access, enabling jet owners to travel at their own convenience. The country has also announced plans of pumping in some 1.5 trillion yuan (US $230 billion) to build 45 new airports in the next five years. Plus, airspace below 4,000 metres has also been opened up to make space for more operators.

In order to operate an aircraft effectively and safely one needs to have certain number of personnel, a chief engineer, and chief pilot. For a businessman to go out and employ these kinds of people, it’s a lot of effort to go through. Many private jet sales in China are new owners and first time buyers, so the need for aircraft management will see an increase as well.

Not only is the private jet industry having great success – the yachting and luxury car markets are also seeing a boom. This has opened up a new arena for companies to showcase their products. There have been a number of luxury expos, like the exclusive three-day private jet expo which is held at the Hongqiao International Airport in Shanghai, China, and the Hainan Rendezvous located in the South China seas, which features a luxurious display of yachts, private jets, fashion, and luxury automobiles. Both these events are only in their second year and have shown tremendous success.

U.K. Budget 2011: George Osborne targets the rich with tax on private jets

In the U.K. People who own private jets will face higher taxes in a bid to make the system fairer for people who just charter them. The measures was outlined in yesterday’s budget which Treasury sources stressed would focus, almost exclusively, on slashing the deficit using private air travel.

A Treasury minister said: “More than two private jets take off or land in Britain every hour, both of them completely untaxed. The move was welcomed by Denys Finch-Hatton, head of gratuitous life ruining at Barclay’s Private Capital and four time a year jet charterer. He said: “It’s about time private jet owners got a taste of what life is like for the rest of us. It’s very difficult trying to get on in the highly competitive world of inconceivable wealth when you are constantly being outshone by someone who’s not paying any tax on his jet.”

The move is expected to cost private jets executives tens of million of pounds each year and will come alongside a freezing of the duty paid by holidaymakers for flights abroad. But they will continue to escape the new charge for at least a year, it is understood, while a consultation is carried out on how to apply it and what the rate should be. Mr Osborne will also use tomorrow’s statement to detail a clampdown on tax avoidance which he hopes will result in an extra £4 billion for the Treasury over the next four years.

According to Gulfstream, the G650 offers the longest range, fastest speed, largest cabin and most advanced cockpit in the Gulfstream fleet. The new model was unveiled in front of a crowd estimated by Gulfstream at about 7,000 people. It got as much applause as a tall, good looking model on a New York runway, maybe more considering what the project may mean for the local economy and the stability of jobs at Gulfstream.

The G650 is capable of traveling 7,000 nautical miles at 0.85 Mach and has a maximum operating speed of 0.925, which will make it the fastest civil aircraft flying.

It can climb to an altitude of 51,000 feet, which allows it to avoid traffic and inclement weather.

Despite a recession and some tough times, the G650 represents faith in the future. “Gulfstream is the largest employer, with 6,000 employees in southeast Georgia,“ says Pres Henne, senior vice president of Programs, Engineering and Test. “Since1967, Gulstream has been a cornerstone of the local economy. The investment of 400 million dollars and the creation of an additional 1,500 jobs over the past three years represents an investment to the community by General Dynamics and by Gulfstream. With the introduction of the G650, that tradition continues.“

Joe Lombardo, executive vice president, General Dynamics Aerospace group says they have 200 orders for the new G650, which is expected to be tested and ready for service by 2012. “I think most of our customers seem to have confidence that things will be improved by then so making orders now,“ says Lombardo.

Lombardo says that last year the aerospace industry got a “bad rap” after some CEO’s flew in private jets to Washington to ask for federal aid for their companies. “The bad rap I think you would agree had died down substantially,“ he says. “This is the result of a lot of education on our part and the part of associations to make sure that people, including those in Congress, understand the number of jobs affected by general aviation.“

Lombardo says they as they ramp up the G650 line next year, they’ll look at what happens to the rate of productions for their existing products. “Then we’ll see whether or not we move people. We can’t say for sure now but our expectation would be to to the point where we would eventually be hiring people back.“

The aircraft seats 11-18 passengers and has 16 panoramic windows and in-flight access to 195 cubic feet of usable volume in the baggage compartment. A first flight is planned for later this year and it is expected to be certified in 2011.
